I returned to drawing the figure after spending several years as an illustrator. My previous style came from my imagination and had a humorous edge to it. For the last two years I’ve been enjoying working with the figure again.
Charcoal and pastels are my usual medium, although I use alkyd oil colors as well. I try to capture the essence of each pose… sometimes leaving out the head and feet, and focusing on the torso, limbs and especially the hands, which I love to draw. If you look closely, people are often saying something with their hands, the way they are placed. You can tell how relaxed or tense a person is by the way their hands are positioned.

I attended UC Davis and Art Center College of Design, both in California, studying fine art and graphic design. I began my career as an illustrator, which I enjoyed for a time, but I eventually wanted to move beyond that and focus on more personal art. My current work is very female-centric. The “dress” series (www.saraswan.com), done primarily in ‘07 and completed early this year, is a foray into both fashion and the female figure.

Some of the figure drawings the dresses are based on appear in my lightbox on the barebrush website.

My next series, “the teenage girl project” will focus on the emotions and body language of the subjects, who are both girls and women at the same time. Words, symbols and mementos, and why we embrace them will also be a part of this series, which is in progress now.
