Guidelines for Curators

The issue:

The issue of guidelines for curators is a tough subject. We've always wanted to give the barebrush curators the maximum freedom in their choice of art for the calendar. That worked very well in the past -- each calendar seemed to have the stamp of the curator as well as the artists whose work is chosen.

It reminds us that the art business, even if the artist works alone, is somewhat of a collaborative effort.

However, with the great increase in participating artists, when a calendar is top heavy with a few artists, although it makes for a cohesive show, it pushes the boundaries of what we are  trying to accomplish, which is to make a platform for many artists of this genre to show their work.

We also want to recognize that the curator's wish to make a beautiful, stunning and/or exciting show to their taste, and of course we have to respect that.

Guidelines for Curators:

Curators are strongly encouraged to pick one work per artist for their calendar. This allows the maximum number of artists to participate in each calendar. Selecting two or more works for a particular artist should only be done if the curator feels that the work is truly extraordinary and no subsequent curator will recognize that fact! One work per artist makes for a lively and diverse calendar.

To provide special recognition to outstanding artists, the curator nominates five artists for the Curators Choice Awards. This provides the mechanism whereby curatorial preference is demonstrated.

These suggested guidelines have been in effect for several months and seem to be working very well (as of Nov 08).
