Black Aesthetics: A Curator's World -- Guest curator, Vaughn Lewis, is an independent curator with a long history at Barebrush. For this month, Mr. Lewis wrote:

For the February calendar, and in recognition of Black History month, I was in search of works which captured Black aesthetics, as an atmosphere, a feeling, tone, and body.

Each time I'm asked to curate, I always look forward to revisiting each artist's work over the years, as well as becoming familiar with new members added to the Barebrush family. In some ways the strong work viewed this year during the selection process made my job bittersweet; SO many strong works to choose from, but I was limited to only 28 for each calendar. However, in the end, I think you'll find all three calendars delightful treats.

Mr. Lewis selected three Curators' Choice nominees for February, (starred dates in the list): 1* The Anderson Seat (print (etch/litho/mono/wdcut)) by Ilene Skeen of New York, NY; 11* Three Views of Desi, 2015 (watercolor) by Jacqueline Saunders of Burke, VA; 17* african (pastel) by Taehyub Lee of New York, NY.

Artworks making their calendar debut: 9. Three artworks are being retired, having now appeared in three calendars: "Sicilian Boy" by Pacifico Palumbo of Colrain , MA; Megan-Jean by Gil Conradis of Melbourne, FL; La Casita by Tony Lee of Panama.

Art for this calendar comes from 10 states, Mexico and Panama.

The 28 artists represented in February, 2017, in day order are: 1* Ilene Skeen, 2 Jean Marcellino, 3 Darlene Kuhne, 4 Chanit Roston, 5 Jeanne Sisson, 6 Neal Smithwillow, 7 Alex Tolstoy, 8 Alex Tolstoy, 9 Chanit Roston, 10 Taehyub Lee, 11* Jacqueline Saunders, 12 Robert Markey, 13 Robert Markey, 14 Tim Woodhouse, 15 Pacifico Palumbo, 16 Richard White, 17* Taehyub Lee, 18 Peggy Dean, 19 William Zuback, 20 William Thierfelder, 21 Tony Lee, 22 Jon Rettich, 23 Peter Wong King, 24 Richard White, 25 Gil Conradis, 26 Dan Simoneau, 27 Peter Wong King, 28 Darlene Kuhne.

Three artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators Choice Awards. The top artist as voted by Barebrush Curators, receives a prize. Winner announced February 20th.

The Barebrush Provenance for each artwork is viewable by clicking on the calendar thumbnail (above) or on the caption under the artwork from each artist’s Barebrush Gallery page. The Barebrush program of retiring artworks that have been selected for three calendars is designed to encourage all artists to show their best new work and keep their online galleries fresh and interesting.
