I have been creating art for most of my life. I began taking lessons when I was in middle school. By the time I was a sophomore in high school, I was exhibiting and competing at the adult level. I later went to college for the fine arts at the University of Southern Maine, majoring in painting, pottery and printmaking and minoring in Art History. I graduated summa cum laude in 1984.
I began painting in 1974. I began painting in oil on masonite boards and moved to oil on canvas. I was always too impatient with oil painting though and started experimenting with acrylic paint. Acrylic had the texture and fast drying time I was looking for and I was hooked. I moved into watercolor at this time as well and also began using acrylic on paper because of its risk and challenge. With transparent acrylic on paper, there is no recovery from a mistake. In my earlier work, because I love photorealism, I would painstakingly paint every detail in the scene. Thanks to an inspiring professor in college who taught watercolor and my independent study courses, I learned I could achieve the illusion of the same amount of detail with much less effort and I continue to paint in this looser style today. While my work may look photographic, close inspection shows that I do paint in a rather loose manner with larger size brushes.
Art plays an important role in my life each day. I exhibit and compete nationally and I have works in many private collections in the United States and abroad. I have been listed in Who’s Who in American Art since 2005 and I received signature status in the International Society of Acrylic Painters in 2010.
The effect of light on objects and atmosphere inspires me. I appear to paint many subjects but the main subject in all of my paintings is light and its effect on the objects in the painting.
With respect to influences, I would have to say that the realists and photo/super realists inspire me. I have done abstract work in the past but I prefer being able to capture the essence of my subject matter as truthfully as possible.
